Our Programs
Poultry Program (Health/Economic Enrichment)
![]() |
The Poultry program is MRIs’ first step in creating self sustaining programs in Mombasa. MRI finances the construction of a chicken coop, purchases 600 chickens (300 layers, 300 fryers) and enough chicken feed for 6 months. After the initial phase the day to day operations of the chicken coop are managed by the school and its students. The key benefits to this program:
- Provides chicken and eggs for students to eat
- Creates income for school
- Gets students involved and teaches a trade
- Creates partnerships between schools and local businesses
- Attendance at schools is up due to lunch program
- Increases parental visits to school
- Students started an agricultural club to document process
The poultry program is currently the most requested program by the schools we support. Its success has required revisions to our prerequisites that a school must meet to become eligible for the Poultry program. This program has been so successful that one school headmaster told us if we expand his chicken coop we can stop funding his daily lunch program.
The beauty of this program is that it represents the next step in our mission, providing avenues for economic growth and independence that each school can leverage long term to sustain the programs we have initiated. This type of program will out-live us all and have a positive impact on our schools and the communities they serve for many years to come.Student Sponsorship Program (Education)
Student sponsorship is the longest running program of the Mombasa Relief Initiative. This program pays the school fees of young students that have lost one or both parents to disease or accident. The cost of sponsoring a student is $200 per year for a primary school student (grades 1-8) and $400 per year for a secondary student (grades 9-12).

The program is designed to create a relationship between student and sponsor via email, pictures and grade submission. This relationship has often blossomed into a long-term friendship between the student and sponsor. In fact several of our sponsors have exceeded their commitment of paying school fees and have assisted their student through the purchase of clothing, shoes and food.
This year was a milestone year for this program; three of the students that were charter members of this program back in 2001, graduated from college. That’s 3 people that would not have been in school at all had MRI not solicited the sponsorship to pay their student fees.
We are actively seeking sponsors for this program, Aids and Malaria epidemics create orphans who must fend for themselves and school is often not obtainable. We ask for a three year commitment from all our sponsors, so the sponsored student can continue their education without interruption.
Sponsors can be individuals, schools, Churches or any group. If you would like to participate in our sponsorship program, please click here to Help A Village Raise A Child.
Other Programs
Programs such as our education initiatives have provided the tools necessary for students to be successful, such as computers, text books, desks, electricity and basic supplies. There are many ways you can help us attain these goals!
